Gilding seven rooftop crosses at St. Francis of Assisi in Sacramento

Lanzini & Sons gilded seven rooftop crosses at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Sacramento, California, in 2024.

The crosses had been painted brown, and that finish was aging. We sanded and prepared each cross before applying 23-karat gold leaf. The gold finish was intended to make the crosses stand out over Sacramento.

Gilding at roof level

The crosses are approximately 80 to 90 feet above street level. This cross-gilding project required scaffolding so we could reach and work directly on their surfaces.

Our restoration of three terracotta statues and the facade crest was a separate job at the parish that year.
