Church Stained Glass Design and Restoration

We design new stained-glass windows for churches and restore existing windows. New work begins with the opening, daylight and sacred imagery. Restoration begins with the condition of the glass, lead, supports and surrounding frame.

New stained-glass windows

The proportions of the opening, nearby windows and changing light help shape a new design. We discuss the subject, colors and where the image will be seen from inside the church. Photographs, approximate opening dimensions and available drawings help establish the setting.

At Immaculate Conception in Sacramento, the interior project included new custom Divine Mercy glass in a side chapel. An existing round window was relocated separately; it was not the newly commissioned glass.

Restoring existing windows

Cracks, loose pieces, bowing panels, deteriorating lead or water concerns need to be reviewed with the whole opening. A problem may involve the glass, its supports, the frame or adjacent building conditions. Photographs help start that review, while treatment depends on the particular window.

At Saint Vincent in San Rafael, we restored 72 individual panels, each approximately three feet by two feet. Work included replacing failing lead, repairing broken glass, renewing glass-to-lead cement and putty, and reinstalling the panels with custom color-matched perimeter glazing and renewed trim.

What to send

For new work, send the opening dimensions if known, interior photographs and ideas for the subject. For an existing window, add full views and close photographs of damage or movement, plus known history. Exterior views are helpful where safely possible; use no risky access to take photographs.

Discuss a stained-glass project or read the window-restoration planning guide. If the windows are part of wider changes, see church interior renovation.
