How to Plan Custom Bronze Work for a Sanctuary

Plan custom bronze work by defining what the piece is for and where it will be placed. The subject, size, finish and relationship to nearby furnishings can then be developed together. A finished design is not needed for the first conversation.

Start with the purpose

A devotional statue, relief, memorial or sanctuary fitting has different needs. Write a short description of the intended use and subject. Note where people will see it, how closely they can approach it and whether it will be indoors or outdoors.

Photograph the proposed setting and nearby materials. An overall view helps explain the scale of the room; closer views show the stone, wood or other surfaces the piece may meet.

Gather a few design references

Approximate dimensions, reference images and inscription text are helpful when available. Identify any requirements already agreed by the parish or institution, along with the people who will review the design. For a church commission, the church should support pursuing the project before the inquiry begins.

Finish choices, such as patina or gilded details, need to suit the design and setting. Their appearance should be discussed alongside surrounding materials and light.

Include placement and access

A commission also needs a practical place in the building or landscape. Share information about the proposed base or mounting location, delivery access and other work planned nearby. Handling and installation arrangements are determined for the particular piece.

The bronze Mary sculpture at Holy Spirit in San Jose is one example: Lanzini & Sons designed the statue, arranged its bronze fabrication and installed it. The Saint Columban tabernacle setting shows how different materials can be coordinated in a focused sanctuary project.

If the bronze already exists

For an existing piece, add photographs of wear, corrosion, damaged finishes, joins and previous repairs. Include known history and describe the result you hope to achieve. An existing-surface question needs to be reviewed before a treatment or new finish is proposed.

Begin the discussion

Send the location, purpose, photographs and approximate size if known. Discuss custom bronze work or read about bronze, gilding and material work. For a statue, the statuary page covers the figure and devotional setting; sanctuary furnishings covers the use of a particular furnishing.
