St. Matthew’s Catholic Church: Interior and Restoration History

Catholic church interior with a large image of Christ above the sanctuary

Lanzini & Sons’ work at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in San Mateo includes the church interior recorded in 1965 and a later period of restoration from 1996 to 2005. These were different phases of the family’s work at the parish.

Project location

St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, 1 Notre Dame Avenue, San Mateo, CA 94402.

The 1965 interior

The family project register records the entire interior, including mosaic, marble, woodwork, the altar and pews, along with a 42-foot mural. This historical commission belongs to the earlier generations’ church-design work.

Later restoration and interior work

The family journals record work at St. Matthew Parish between 1996 and 2005. It included doors, pew and kneeler modifications, modesty panels, chapel and sanctuary design, mosaics and tile, columns, decorative beam stenciling, chandeliers, Stations of the Cross, tabernacle work, grottos and murals. The family returned for further mosaic work in January 2005.

The work extended across several visits and different parts of the church.
