How to Plan a Church Mosaic Project

Framed Divine Mercy mosaic with Jesus and red and pale rays at Saint Columban in Garden Grove.

Plan a church mosaic around its subject and setting, then consider scale, light and the surface that will support it. For an existing mosaic, begin with its condition and known history. Both paths benefit from full views of the church and close views of the work area.

Define the subject and purpose

A sanctuary image, tabernacle niche, devotional setting or exterior mosaic serves a particular place. Describe the subject you have in mind and where people will encounter it. Note the principal viewing distance and nearby art or furnishings.

You can start with a broad idea. Collect any useful reference images and identify who will review the direction for the parish or institution.

Show the setting

Photograph the whole wall or niche and the room around it. Include approximate dimensions and available drawings. Daylight, artificial lighting, neighboring materials and sightlines all affect how the design reads.

Note visible cracking, moisture or movement at the proposed location. Questions about the wall or support need to be considered before the installation approach is settled.

Learn from two different commissions

The Divine Mercy mosaic at Saint Columban was designed, assembled, framed and installed in 2018. A separate 2017 tabernacle-niche project brought gold mosaic, marble and lighting into an existing reredos. The examples show how the intended role shapes the scope.

When an existing mosaic needs care

Photograph the complete mosaic and details of loose or missing pieces, cracks and earlier repairs. Add known history, signs of moisture and access information. Describe what you observe without trying to remove or secure pieces for the photographs.

The Bakersfield mosaic restoration included cleaning, local crack and loss repairs, selected regrouting and color blending. Those treatments followed the needs of that mosaic; another work may need a different scope.

Bring the information together

Send the location, your goal, photographs and approximate dimensions. Say whether the project is a new design, restoration or a question about both. Discuss a mosaic project, see mosaic services or explore liturgical design when the mosaic is part of wider sanctuary planning.
