How to Plan a Catholic Church Interior Renovation

Completed Immaculate Conception interior with the tile aisle and restored sanctuary finishes.

Begin a church interior renovation by agreeing on the parish’s goals, identifying what should remain and documenting the present condition. The project may be a repainting refresh or coordinated changes to artwork, furnishings and finishes in an existing church.

Describe the reason for the work

Write down what is prompting the project. Aging paint, damaged art, an awkward furnishing arrangement and a desire for a new devotional image are different starting points. Distinguish repairs that need attention from changes the parish would like to consider.

Walk through the sanctuary and nave with the project in mind. Note how the space is used during worship and at other times, and which areas or artworks matter most to the parish.

Record what is there

Take wide photographs of the interior and closer views of condition concerns. Gather available plans, approximate dimensions, known project history and previous repair records. A photograph of one damaged detail is more useful when accompanied by a view of its place in the room.

List the artwork and furnishings that should remain. Restoration or adaptation can be considered alongside new work.

Consider connected elements together

An altar, ambo, font, tabernacle, sacred images and finishes affect how the sanctuary is experienced. A focused project can remain small while accounting for the surrounding room. A broader renovation needs those relationships considered before individual details are settled.

At Immaculate Conception in Sacramento, the project connected stained glass, painting, tile flooring and sanctuary furnishings. All Saints Anglican Cathedral in Long Beach combined flooring, work on an existing altar platform, new communion rails and repainting.

Identify review and practical needs

Name the clergy, parish representatives, architect or other people responsible for decisions. Note worship schedules, public access, delivery routes and any timing constraints. The sequence and division of responsibilities depend on the approved scope and site.

Lanzini & Sons works on existing church interiors, including minor interior changes. New church buildings and building additions are outside the current offering.
